SUMMARY:Karen presenting at Grace Hopper Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference is the world’s largest gathering of women technologists. It is produced by the Anita Borg Institute and presented in partnership with ACM. \nThis year\, Karen and Carol Farnsworth of Facebook will be co-leading a workshop on Team Onboarding: Key Success Factors and How to Apply Them. The workshop shares recent research on the new hire experience\, including what does and doesn’t work. Using exercises and take-home tools\, participants explore key factors and create action plans for their company.  \nEvery year\, GHC brings together the community of women technologists\, the best minds in computing and increased visibility for the contributions of women to computing. In 2017 there were 18\,000 attendees from 81 countries\, with over 1\,300 companies represented. \nKaren & Carol are honored to be selected from 1\,000+ submissions to this very important conference. \nThe conference is September 26-28 in Houston\, Texas. Karen & Carol’s workshop is September 27 from 1:45pm-2:45pm. Registration opens July 11.  For more details\, visit the GHC conference website.

SUMMARY:International Conference on Engineering\, Technology and Innovation
DESCRIPTION:The International Conference on Engineering\, Technology and Innovation (ICE/IEEE ITMC) is one of the premier conferences from the IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (IEEE TEMS). \nA paper co-written by Karen Holtzblattt and Nicola Marsden of Heilbronn University is being presented at the conference. Retaining Women in Technology — Uncovering and Measuring Key Dimensions of Daily Work Experiences describes the qualitative and quantitative studies that identified the key factors necessary in the daily work experience within a technology company\, women’s self-perception in this environment\, and the development of the @Work Experiences Measure. Karen is excited to partner with Nicola on this work and its presentation to the IEEE community. \nThe conference is June 18-June 20 in Stuttgart\, Germany. Nicola is presenting the paper on June 18. For more information\, go to the conference website. The paper is available for downloading here.

SUMMARY:CHI 2018: Designathon to Support Women in Tech
DESCRIPTION:Karen is co-leading an exciting new SIG at CHI. To set the stage for the designathon\, Karen and co-presenter Nicola Marsden will share the findings from a worldwide survey of women and men that reveal the underlying reasons for low retention. SIG participants will then brainstorm and sketch technology solutions. \nLet’s come together and harnesses our community’s creativity to think through ways to use technology to support diversity and retention. \nLearn more on the conference website. \n

SUMMARY:CHI 2017: Ways to Represent User Data: Best Practices in Communication Design
DESCRIPTION:Karen is co-leading two SIGs at CHI. In this one\, Karen and co-presenter Carol Farnsworth of Facebook will be leading a discussion about the best way to communicate user research to stakeholders. Below is a description. You can learn more on the conference website. \nThe need for user research is accepted by most high-tech companies. But getting the research into the minds of the people creating products remains challenging. UX professionals must represent the users world and communicate findings in compelling representations that lead to design action. The challenge has become harder because mobile devices let us accomplish activities in bits of time across multiple devices. Also\, service design\, total customer experience\, journey maps and process design all require visualization. \nBut what are the best ways to represent the user data? How can UX professionals immerse the team in user data to drive design? \nThis SIG helps participants improve their data representations. Co-organizers present their best practices\, the visualizations they use\, and how they use them. Participants try the techniques and share their own experiences and missteps for communicating user research.

SUMMARY:CHI 2017: Using Games for Good to Address Diversity in High Tech
DESCRIPTION:Karen is co-leading two SIGs at CHI. In this one\, Karen and co-presenter Bill Kunes be sharing the work of their students at the University of Maryland. Below is the description. You can learn more on the conference website. \nA constant flow of reporting documents the lack of women and other underrepresented groups in high tech. In response\, companies are working to fill the hiring pipeline. But beyond filling the pipeline\, statistics show women leave technology fields in mid-career 50% more often than men. Recent research on retention and work-life issues reveals key factors in women??s success\, which supports interventions that are being developed. \nThe games for good movement tackles social problems and offers a potentially engaging intervention approach. Working with the research data on the lives and success factors of women in technology companies\, the organizers and a group of students are building a set of games to raise awareness and change behavior in a fun way. \nSIG attendees will be able to respond to these game concepts\, play selected games with mock-ups and provide feedback\, and contribute ideas of how gaming can be used to support diversity.
