GoPro isn’t just a camera

by Joerg Beringer    02/21/2012

My son wanted a GoPro video camera for Christmas. It is an outdoor camera, small and without a viewer. You don’t shoot videos from others, but capture yourself on action by mounting it on your helmet or your sport equipment. I had a hard time to understand the excitement of my son about this camera, since with the exception of the ruggedness and HD, all other features you would expect from a camera seem to be missing.  He pointed me to the GoPro community web site to look at some video samples. And then I got it ! It is about the coolness of being able to capture your own sport activity and sharing it afterwards with friends. It is not about you shooting a video, it is about the camera eyewitnessing how great you are. GoPro managed to create a video camera that entails an entirely new meaning which is all about “cool”. Not having to worry about taking an electronic device outdoors takes away hassle. Being able to share my own coolness in action with others connects me socially and makes me look like a hero. We couldn’t find the GoPro on sale, but no surprise – because people want it – and it is not just a camera !
