I use my iPhone to take photographs regularly. As much as I love having my photos on my phone or computer, call me old fashioned, but I still like to print my photos and make albums for my family and friends to browse through when they come visit. Although it is very easy to take pictures with the iPhone or iPad, printing is a different story. I recently discovered the xPrintServer, and with one click, lets me print from my phone to my printer at home. It’s easy, fast, and it doesn’t require any difficult installations or apps to function. Everything is done wirelessly through my router. No added difficulties, small package, and always ready to print. The xPrinterServer complies with our Cool Concepts: Direct into Action because it prints like magic, and The Hassel Factor because it adds convenience without compromising the experience.

Here’s one of the Coolest products I’ve ever owned: my beloved HP-15C scientific calculator, still in daily use after 30 years. This was geek chic before there even was geek chic!

The best thing about the 15C is an amazing entry scheme called Reverse Polish Notation, or RPN for short. Once you know RPN, you can quickly rip off even the most complicated calculations with a small number of keystrokes—about as Direct into Action and Hassle-free as advanced math gets. It wasn’t easy to learn, but once you did, it was like you were in a club—the HP15C was a signal to all that you were hardcore. Okay, so it didn’t exactly attract the girls, but it became a part of my emerging “I-don’t-care-what-you-think-I-like-math” teen identity. And, the design was beautiful in its own way: a novel landscape orientation, nice weight, great travel and bounce on the keys, and an overall sensation of solidness and quality similar to what I would feel much later in my first iPhone. The HP15C just about perfectly nails our Cool Concepts: Accomplishment, Direct into Action, Hassle-free, Identity and Sensation.

The HP15C is still a geek cult icon some 35 years after its first release. For those of us in science and engineering, it doesn’t get much cooler.

Laptops can do just about anything, but they can’t stay cool. Overheating is a huge problem and often makes it uncomfortable to use on your lap. I just got the NotePal ERGO 360 which is an ergonomic laptop cooling stand with the ability to also transform into a tablet stand. The design helps eliminate the hand and wrist fatigue that comes from using a laptop for long periods of time. It allows you to stay mobile, and keep your laptop cool while using it. I don’t always use my laptop on a table, so having this pad eliminates the uncomfortable burning sensation on my lap. To keep it cool, the pad uses fans which are USB powered and very quiet. The ERGO 360 is easy to adjust to my preferred viewing angle, eliminating any glares on my screen. As opposed to traditional cooling pads, it has a full rotating stand which comes in handy when I want to sit back, relax and watch a video on my laptop.
